The Power of Prevention: Why Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings Matter
When it comes to protecting our health, early detection is one of the strongest tools we have—and that’s especially true for breast and cervical cancer. For many women, especially those in underserved communities, regular screenings can mean the difference between a treatable condition and a devastating diagnosis. At Native Healthcare Center and within our broader Indigenous and underserved communities, we believe in the power of prevention. We know that culturally respectful and accessible care helps break down the barriers that often prevent women from getting the screenings they need. Why Screening Matters Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but when caught early, it is highly treatable. Regular mammograms can detect cancer before symptoms appear—when it’s most responsive to treatment. Cervical Cancer:
Thanks to screenings like Pap smears and HPV tests, cervical cancer is largely preventable. These tests help detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous or catch the disease at its earliest stages .Disparities in Screening Native American and Indigenous women face higher rates of late stage diagnoses due to lack of access, limited culturally competent care, and historic mistrust in the healthcare system. Our goal is to change that by offering safe, supportive spaces where all women can access life-saving screenings without fear or stigma. What You Can Do
Know Your Schedule:
Breast Cancer: Women over 40 should have yearly mammograms (or earlier based on family history).
Cervical Cancer: Pap tests should start at age 21, with frequency depending on your health history.
Talk to your provider: If you’re unsure what screenings are right for you, ask. There is no one-size-fits-all plan.
Encourage others: Sometimes, a gentle reminder or shared ride to an appointment makes all the difference.
Use free and low-cost programs: Many clinics, like ours, offer free breast and cervical screenings—regardless of insurance or immigration status.
Our Commitment At Native Healthcare Center, we are proud to stand with women of all backgrounds—especially those in our Native and Indigenous communities—to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings that are culturally rooted, trauma-informed, and driven by care and respect. Your health is sacred. Your life matters.
